The Article
I can’t find the article but based on what she said, her 20’s was a total mess. Whose wasn’t? Mine was definitely a fiasco!
My 20’s started with a bang. I happened to find myself a job at a fastfood restaurant while waiting for my diploma. I quit my job right after I graduated from college and I kept changing jobs ever since. My career path was obviously headed nowhere.
My love life was no exception. I was brought up to maturity until my mid 20’s by a live-in partner and I stupidly messed up. My late 20’s consisted of changing partner after partner ever since. The pattern was simply the same.
My wealth was insufficient. I drained my savings account during the runaway event of my life and my wallet was exhausted. The money was being circulated out of my pocket bill after bill ever since.
My health smacked me big time. I was a rocker during my teenage life. There aren’t any pleasures I haven’t tasted. I develop this and that, and so I took pill after pill ever since.
My relationship with my family was a tough one. I ran away every time I did something wrong and was so afraid to face the consequences. I never fail to disappoint them. It was disappointment after disappointment ever since.
My friends were like flowers that were freshly picked in the wild. They wither after three days. Even though you try to preserve them in a jar of water, the petals slowly fall one by one, petal after petal.
To top it all, physical appearance doesn’t flatter me anymore. I used to be a cheer dancer and who will believe it now? The skirts, the midriffs, the tubes and all those skimpy clothes are long dead and gone. Even the henna and the belly button ring were absurd. I feel hopelessness every time I looked in the mirror. It was pound after pound ever since.
This is how I characterize myself during my 20’s.
In a few months, I will be 30. I know it’s a little early to write this down because at some point I still have time to end it with dignity. The reason why I’m pushing this is because the writer from that article wrote that people who reached their 30’s already know what they can and cannot change. At this point, I know them already.
I cannot change the fact that I am a graduate. I include this because it is really hard to finish school. Whether the pop quiz, the thesis, the peer pressure or the problem I encounter to pay for my tuition. It matters. It is significant. It is from my diploma I get the strength every time I was being interviewed job after job. I cannot change the fact that I am job-hopper. I don’t want opportunities. I don’t want change. What I want is better opportunities. I want a better change.
I include my educational background because I have a strong belief that I can be whatever I wanted to be if I set my mind into it.
In the love aspect, I cannot change the fact that I messed up with Jack. But looking for Jack in the people I had committed myself to, that I can change.
I cannot change the fact I have this strong attraction with the same sex. At this point in my life, I have accepted who I really am.
For the wealth part, I can change my spending habits. I can refrain myself from buying unnecessary stuffs and stick with what is really essential. I can find a way to invest on things and live a simpler life.
I can change my lifestyle. I can choose healthier foods but I cannot deprive myself to starvation. Crash diet is not my thing and chocolates are still my favorites. I can still eat them but in small amounts. I cannot change the feeling of displeasure with regards to gym but I can have my own exercise routine like walking or biking or similar activities that will not bore me.
I can change the unpleasant relationship I had with my family. I will face my fear and never runaway but I cannot change the way I stood with my beliefs. I am proud of that.
I can change the way I treat my friends. I will not make the same mistake of raining them with my problems. I will not inject them of “me-issues” to every conversation. This time, I’ve learned to be the listener, the giver, of me being a real friend.
It was weeks ago when I read this article from PDI. It was Celine Lopez who inspired me to look at myself one more time. Whatever happens in my 30’s I know I will survive for I can’t wait to be in my 40’s where people like you and me don’t give a crap.

Ilocanos
I was brought up by my grandfather who was in fact a pure blooded Ilocano. He was tall, dark and really strong. His voice was deep and his words were unbreakable. He was the top-notcher for the board exams in his batch and served as a US Navy for many years. He was conservative, sobrang kuripot and his kastigo for a child was ruthless. Growing up with him made me feel different kind of injustices.
I remember his punishments were traumatizing and his words were brutal. There were a series of spanking and he always locked me alone inside the room until it gets dark, which in a later years made me become claustrophobic.
In November 1989, my grandparents and I visited dead relatives at Manila Memorial. On the way home, I was so thirsty and I begged my lolo to stop the car to buy me something to drink. The typical Ilocano that he is, he was being kuripot at that time. It made my mouth so dry, I almost died from dehydration that day.
One Christmas, my cousins stood in line because my grandfather was giving them aguinaldo. I fell in line as well. By the time he saw me, he told me to step away. He said he would not give me any aguinaldo because I’m eating at his table and living under his roof already.
There are a lot of things that should be forgotten and I actually survived for how many years because of my grandmother who became my kanlungan. That’s the home I actually referred to that I ran away from.
How did I end up with my Ilocano lolo anyway? It’s because my half-Ilocano father was away, busy earning money abroad while my bored teenage mom was swept away by a pure-Ilocano man.
For years I disliked this Ilocano man. He was irresponsible and tore my family apart. While my father, a half-Ilocano man was as brutal as his father when it comes to punishments. If the pure Ilocano guy lost his temper at me because of my rudeness everytime I saw him, the half-Ilocano man can make my mouth bleed through his spanking.
So I met a lot of people through the years. I met an Ilocana neighbor girl on the street and everytime we had an argument, we slapped each other on the face and pull each other’s hair.
It didn’t stop there. The heartthrob on our street was swept away by a heartthrob Ilocana girl who was by the later years I found out is the cousin of the pure Ilocano man. I hated Ilocanos so much that I even blamed the ¼ Ilocano blood that I have for being dark-skinned.
So here’s the story. I fell in love last year, 25th of October 2007. The girl was a lawyer and yeah, kunatsing. I later found out that she’s a pure Ilocana and it’s too late for me. Even her Ilocano family displayed rudeness to me. As usual, there were numerous things I can hate about her. The way she makes kuripot on our dates that sometimes leads me to hunger. My mom actually knows if I’ve been on a date with her because I eat hungrily when I get home. She will say, “Kasama mo si attorney noh?”. She’s more into cheap thrills to the extent of being so miserly and it really makes me cry. I sometimes feel dizzy because even if it’s hot, she will not let me use the aircon in her car because she’s making tipid with the gas. Living with her means experiencing tipid to the max from her paulit-ulit clothes down to the 10 times recycled cooking oil.
So why do I let myself suffer? The reason is simple. Love. In spite of everything, this feeling stands out. My Ilocano grandfather and I became closer in his last few years. I remember one time when I was so angry with him I told him that when he grows old I will not take care of him. But I did. I lovingly still did. I had routines of combing his hair, changing his diapers and cooking his food. That one night he lightly kissed me on my cheek, even without a word, everything he did to me was forgiven.
The half-Ilocano man who is my father was understood. To the most hurtful day of my life, he was there. At that very moment, I really felt he was my father.
The pure Ilocano man was remorseful. To his dying days, I forgave him. It might be hard for me supporting the family he left behind, but I became closer to my mom, my 2 half brothers and my half sister who were all half Ilocanos.
I thanked God for the Ilocana girl who was my neighbor. She became my best friend, my eyes and my strength.
I feel blessed with the lawyer girl I fell in love with. Even if I’m the big Asyang Aksaya and Juan Tamad for the past three months, she still supported me. She made me see the wonders of Ilocos - the museums and old houses of Vigan. She made me taste the wonder of Ilocos from bagnet, Vigan Longganisa, dinengdeng, empanadas at the plaza, Ilocos vinegar and Basi wine. The sweetest thing this Ilocana did for me is to tell me stories for the whole duration of a six-hour trip so that I would not feel dizzy from motion sickness.
Sometimes she surprises me. There are a lot of things she will do for you despite of being kuripot. She can be so romantic - dating me for the whole day and going to a spa because household duties for me is hard. She takes me to the charming little shops that sell weird stuffs and knick-knacks. She lets me choose what I want from The Reading Room that was owned by Sandy, the fortune teller, and I pick an odd green stuffed toy named “Maleigna” because I have a huge collection of exotic dolls. I finally completed my collection of VC Andrews’ Flowers in the Attic series ‘because I found a copy of “Seeds of Yesterday” from an antique shop/booksale. She wined and dined me at Bellini’s and I had to ask myself again and again, “totoo ba ito?” (Sinampal ko na ang sarili ko, pero totoo!)
So there, I like Ilocanos. I can say it in different words synonymously. I can say I highly prize, delight in, and cherish them because, again, I am fond of them. How can I treasure them this much? Probably because I feel that I was surrounded by unique love of Ilocanos who in fact played a major role in my life.

Child's Play
When I was young, there were a lot of Filipino nursery rhymes that were invented, just like Bahay Kubo. It vividly shows our unique Filipino culture. These songs were part of our play, popular to pat-a-cake. I can still remember chanting some of them:
Nanay, tatay
Gusto kong tinapay
Ate, kuya
Gusto kong kape
Lahat ng gusto ko
Ay susundin ninyo
Sinong magkamali
Ay siyang pipingutin ko
Isa, dalawa, tatlo
Apat, lima, anim
Pito, walo, siyam
Sampu!
In Filipino tradition, the elders always have the authority. Children were taught that it’s impolite to talk if they are not asked to. They don’t have a voice. What they have to say doesn’t matter and nobody bothers. In this song, they hardly wished even for play to be in their shoes, to be heard. Some elders almost make their children slaves, if for some reason they disoblige, elders will start to count and spank the children afterwards.
Lumipad sa langit
‘Di ko na nakita
Pumutok na pala
Sayang lang ang pera ko
Binili ng lobo
Sa pagkain sana
Nabusog pa ako
This song speaks of the economic crisis the country always seems to be under. Children are taught that we have to buy necessity first. I remember when I was kid, after the Sunday Mass, street vendors were everywhere and I try to convince my grandmother to buy me a red balloon. She told me that she didn’t have enough money, but when I told her I want kutchinta, she bought me 2 plastic bags of it; to think that it’s more expensive than the balloon.
Di kutsilyo de almasen
Haw haw de karabaw
Batuten
Sipit namimilipit
Ginto’t Pilak
Namumulaklak
Sa tabi ng dagat
Sayang pula
Tatlong pera
Sayang puti
Tatlong salapi
Impiyerno
Im-im-impiyerno
Saksak puso
Tulo ang dugo
Patay Buhay
Alis ka na dyan
Bakla, tomboy!
Asawa ni Marie
Araw, gabi
Walang panty
May asawang hapon
‘di mapakali
Tumawag ng pulis

How It Started
The greatest thing in writing about strangers is that they are almost inanimate, no consideration of feelings. I play with what I think about them. They’re like puppets moved by strings. They can dance, swayed from my lead. They can never talk back because again, they are strangers. Strangers remain strangers. They don’t know who you are, absolutely no idea that there are stories written about them, and they don’t care.
The past is written with emotions, carefully woven with thoughts and crafted with chosen words. They told me that writing is a therapy. What makes it so special is that it can be gruesome, some things were buried and you have to unveil privacy like looking at an old photographs. Writing about it creates a dimension where recollection takes place, opening first chapter of your life, exposing to someone who bothers to care. Past is divided into two parts, like being filed in a different folder, residing at the deepest part of your heart. Some should be forgotten, kept as inactive file while some remains as a treasure and once in awhile actively runs shots of flashbacks providing you good hormones. The scariest part about writing them is that you know they are real.
Writing about learning is the easiest. It is kinder than writing descriptions of trapped feelings or a daily journal. Situations here are negative subject to change. The words that will be written are boastful and yes, with dignity.
Today is Thursday, 25th of September 2008. The islands were in the hands of the storm “Nina”. The winds were turbulent and the rain was scattered. The sky was gray and the sun was feeling discomfort. Today is not as ordinary as yesterday. It’s our 11th monthsary and my plan was again disregarded. I should’ve cleaned the apartment to spotless, made the beds, ran some errands, get the laundry, buy something for tonight’s dinner, and well yeah, taken a bath. I should’ve cleared the kitchen sink for a start, but instead I brewed the coffee, lighted a cigarette stick and rebooted the laptop.
Today, I’m going to write about her and how it started.
I was sort of thin last year. It was the time that I thought eating was pointless and I made alcohol my hobby. I don’t know why being depressed make me looked good, that’s what my friends say or probably they were just being polite. However, it makes me feel damn good like a revenge or something that I lost my fear in cameras and developed this passion of being captured in pictures. I was broken-hearted from having broken off with a live-in female partner. I was shoved out from our nest with her name tattooed on my ass. Besides drinking, I dated numerous lesbians. The story was classic.
I was desperate. I’m a type of person who believes that I can properly move on and that life is prettier if you share it with someone. I can almost make an ad that goes like this.

Anyway, instead of this, I hooked up with a clan. It’s a group of flirty lesbians who abuse Globe unlitxt to the max. It’s like a forum and chat on the internet but cheaper. They were a bunch of nonsense. They are alive 24 hours! It broke my cellphone and ran my battery to empty. It was crazy. That’s a good thing about craziness, it gives you an opportunity to experience the extraordinary. A clanmate, Nadjz had a clanmate named Men-men. She had a “single and looking” lawyer friend named Germaine.
We were set up by them to meet at an exclusive party. Secretly, I was bound to meet 2 of them. Germaine and Katsura, a girl from the clan. By 9pm, I met Men-men, a formal butch in her 30’s who wore polo, pare, tucked-in her pants. Leather belt is visible matched with leather shoes. The lesbian world that I am in was different. We were hippies, carefree, worships dirty pants, printed shirts and funky sneakers. She was yeah, “formal”. I was caught off-guard and the moment she spoke to me was like how a boss would talk to an employee, slow yet clear. At first she told me that Germaine was sick and was not able to meet me and she asked my name twice as if it’s hard to remember like Rumplestiltskin. She asked questions like I was being interviewed for a high-paying job.
“Iha, taga-saan ka ba?”
“Makati.”
Iha is a strong word and in my head I was thinking, should I say ‘Makati po?’ I was taught not to be rude with elders and should use appropriate responses like ‘po’ and ‘opo’.
“So anong ba ang trabaho mo?”
Her questions became weirder.
“Call center agent sa Makati” (po?)
“Kasi yung kaibigan ko naghahanap sya ng pwede nyang makusap..”
Like I was stupid or something. God! I tell you…I was like a chicken being dressed alive.
She continues,“Lawyer sya sa DSWD..”
She pauses like to impress me that ‘hey, my friend is big time okay, so I need a proper screening’. My ego was insulted. Who is this lawyer friend of yours anyway? Is she God? Baka mamaya pulpol na lawyer lang yan! If I know, notaryong lawyer lang yan! These thoughts boost 2 bars of my ego..and patience. It helped me not to throw rude remarks at the most tempting moment. I let her finished her sentence.
“Maliit sya katulad ko.”
And I said, “okay…”
“Eto ba ang number mo?”
After she verified..
“Okay, Ite-text ka na lang nya.”
See? Like I didn’t pass the interview. Like we’ll let you know if you pass or not. Later on, Nadjz told me about Men-men’s comment - Bakit hindi raw ako naka-dress. Ang sa’akin naman e hotel ba ito? Pwet mo!
I went upstairs, drank bottles of beers with Penguin and clanmates; danced and rocked with the band and spend the remaining wee hours in bed with Katsura.
Two days after, I received a message from Germaine. She was apologizing for ditching me. The message was odd. The time is way passed by although her message creates an impact because it means triumph. I passed the fucking interview wearing pants.
I was challenged. Men-men, I was challenged. Thank you.
The exchange of messages through text was awful. The messages she sent were forwarded quotes. They were limited. One in the morning and one in the evening. It was pathetic. Mind you, it goes on for a week and I lost interest.
As I was doing my work, talking to an American boring me about her woes of her cancelled flight, Germaine texted me to meet her after work. Like preparing for another job interview, I should know something about her so I surfed the net and read her friendster profile. Would that be enough? Should I browse volumes of law books or memorize the preamble maybe? No. I decided to be myself. I decided to slap her with who I really am. I decided to wear pants, shirt and my trusty Chucks. I accessorized myself with rubber and leather bands. Goddamn, I will tell you that I sported a tattoo on my back.
I nervously walked to the hotel’s lobby. That would be at Renaissance’s in Makati. She came from a boring conference or training of some sort. I already saw her from the outside window seated alone, wearing pink polo in the lightest shade. She was so gay. She’s a live carbon copy of Men-men. I’m no longer doubtful about ‘birds of the same feather, flock together’. She recognized me, I don’t know why, so I just politely smiled.
We walked at Greenbelt Park. I considered her poor in Dating 101. She’s cheap. She told me to bring her somewhere inexpensive, not that I’m going to ask her to treat me or anything like that but I responded by telling her to eat our first dinner at the food court in which she declines by the way.
We settled ourselves in Gloria Mariz. She ordered herself Vigan longganiza and since I have the idea that it might be a dutch treat, I ordered coffee. I ordered coffee with a lie. I stirred my coffee with a concoction of lies. I ordered coffee because she’s a lawyer. I ordered coffee because it’s formal. I might probably order tea if the setting will be in England. I have this crazy thought that even if I wore jeans instead of a skirt, the cup of coffee would make me look formal. Business meetings were always conducted with coffee. Hence, coffee can be labeled as formal. Maturity is formal.
So now I am “formal”. Should I begin reciting the preamble now? What will be the conversation flow? Will it be about sex? I mean sexual harassment maybe? I almost slap myself. Why would I have to pretend in order for her to like me? Would I really want her to like me? I have rights you know. I have the right to express my feelings. I have the right to be myself. I am thinking a lot of rights that evening and I know she mastered all the rights that was constituted by law. After my first cup of coffee, I shifted myself in ordering a bottle of cold beer.
She was pleasant and calm. She wore glasses and her eyes were blinder than mine. Her pink polo was like chosen on purpose, it radiates the gentleness of her face. Her voice is a comfort like blanket during your sleepless nights. She was blessed with perfect teeth. Her hands were small like how literature describes a modest English woman. She glances and her glance shifts to stare. Her eyes twinkle. She can set the mood. I can almost feel tiny little hearts are falling. It made me feel the month of February. She has the ability of making you talk, making you laugh, making you sad. She has the ability to unlock different versions of feelings. She was fascinating. To me she was absolutely wonderful!
The next day was considered by her as a date. Poems were written about me and each poem was recited like how Filipinos serenade Filipinas thru haranas. For a whimsical moment she left me speechless, I was dazed with poetry and soon the magic began.
There are millions of stuffs about her that I can write. I can write how I missed her smell if she’s not around and why being away from her makes me sad. I can write how I wanted to kiss her good mornings and then again kiss her good nights. She wanders inside of me like poetry written on a priceless script producing scrolls of parcels. I can write anything about her in volumes and I can write about her for life. I want to write about her cruelty and how I reacted. I want to write about our differences and how we learn to work things out. I wanted so much to write about her and our lives together. I want to write about this sometime.
For now I have written how simple poetry became a conversation of love. The words that are written are only limited to the feelings that I wanted to describe. Living with her is more than amazing, it’s more than enough.
Happy Monthsary Nini and I love you!

THIS (IM)PERFECT PLACE
I ran away to a new place so that I can heal the wounds slowly. I am broken into a million little pieces. I know it will take a lot of time, but I’m allowing myself to go through the process. Sometimes you need to find a place to start your life again. A place where you can run freely without any dictates and even better without any communication. Sometimes the child in you has a terrible need for what is surreal and drives your instinct for someplace to play. You have to start somewhere.
I transferred somewhere in between Quezon City and Manila where condominiums are actually not as high as you can see in the elite class of the dream city. But it is more colorful than you can imagine.
Children, vendors, teenagers, nurses, workers, bummers are everywhere - all kinds of people. Tom cats and stray dogs are everywhere. There are four sort of security guards/barker in shifting schedules. Parking is crazy during the night. Parked cars are very similar to how my little brother parked his Matchbox.
Our building’s paint is faded, chipped from the change of the weather. Almost each unit has a string of clothes like banderitas for a fiesta. There’s no elegant reception, drapes, elevator or even layers of chandeliers. The stairs are uneven. The hallways are dark, cold and wet even on the brightest day. The ceilings and walls are musty, covered with fractured cobwebs. I can hear the oil dancing in my neighbor‘s pan and the onions being sautéed on a skillet waft different aromas and flavors through the halls.
The corridors resound with disjointed voices and music; the wailing of babies in harmony with their nannies’ lullabies. The laughter, arguments, problems, even the simple conversation of these people are like chants. It gives you an affirmation of existence and a normal cycle of life.

Some Not-So-Current Issues
I'm away from home for almost 3 weeks now. I miss the coffee maker and jazz. I miss the crooked stairs, comfortable silence and liberty of smoking all over the place. I miss the good mornight pasta with a friend and an indulgement of chips, liquors and icecream. I miss the chaos around the street from Aling Ludy's habitual early morning sweeping to the late night dancing of teenage bummers and it's bystanders audience.
I should be missing a person, family perhaps but I guess when something that was so good turns to bad, it becomes depressing, then you have to create a wonderful world.
By believing passionately in something that still does not exist, we create it. The nonexistent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired. -- Franz Kafka
Dear God, I looked forward to April.
-------------------------------------------------------
So here comes work. I used to meet Dolly at Barrio Fiesta every working day, me running late, grinning and making excuses asking what her baon is. I missed that too. A 10 to 15-minute jeepney ride and voila! Now, I uncomfortably walked under the wicked sun pretending I was walking on sand even if it feels like walking past millions of cactuses around the place sweating and panting like a dog struggling for an oasis. I sometimes stop and admire the busy place while I smile to anyone who needs it. I'm taking LRT to MRT on my way to work. I'm not complaining about the travel because this is the only way I can be with my GF, it's the work that gets me, crawling to my nerves from hitting metrics to everyday updates which contains wonderful work of disney with no increase and unbelievable policies like you'll think twice of peeing and go to work with a catheter on. This is exactly what I feel everytime I realized I'm on my way to the BIG W.
There are days when I can hardly make it out of bed. I find it an effort to speak. I measure progress in steps, the next one and the next one, as far as the bathroom. These steps are major accomplishments. I focus on taking the cap off the toothpaste, getting the brush up to my mouth. I have difficulty lifting my arm to even do that. I feel I am without worth, that nothing I can do is of any value, least of all to myself… I am a busy person, in theory. There are things to be done, although none of them are things I want to do. – Margaret Atwood, Cat’s Eye

Lesbian and Cheese
Bukod sa bilog at mapait ang lasa,
may kakaiba itong amoy na nahahawig sa "kwan".
On my teenage years,
I began to have the likes of this red wax-covered ball of cheese.
Edam was my first, then came Magnolia and so on and so forth.
It was so addictive I began to be open about it.
From then on I'm anxiously waiting for the year to end
'Coz christmas is the month of Queso de Bola.
" Nangungulila ka man ng ilang buwan
Sa ulirat nagtatanong kung kailan
Ngunit 'di mapigil na 'di ka tikman
Kahit sa kahuli-huling sukdulan"
Ivy and I were having breakfast this January morning
A month to consume this luscious ball of cheese
From omelets to pancakes there's a grand dash of cheese
Sabi ni Ivy,
"Lesbiana ka talaga"

First Glimpse
I felt something new the first time I saw you.
There was this urge to know the real you.
I was confused by past and present
though I couldn't forget how you look so snob-
yet so sweet at the same time..
Thinking of You
I want to feel you breathing next to me.
I want to hold your hand just like that.
I want to kiss your lips a million times.
Your scent lulls me to sleep.
I will never let go of your hand.
I will stay with you forever..

Non-Postal Day
I wore my plain white shirt today, fresh ironed pants and brown polka-dot flip flops.
Clouds are clear today as well as my mind. Sun is dancing while the flowers are smiling. God, I love sunday mornings!
Clean. I feel clean today.
