In Memory of You

Dear Potchi,

Last year when I was at nesting, I saw you at the intranet, the staff’s website. We were browsing, checking the possible supervisor that we will be under. Your posing in the photos were always slightly sideways, just like Mega Star Sharon Cuneta. Bookie told me once that it was your best angle.

You were almost my supervisor, do you know that? I was the first one to pick the schedule because I was top of my class. I understand that your team was always on top because you get the nicest schedule with Saturdays and Sundays off. Lazy as I was I picked Teejay’s schedule instead with three days off.

Who cannot recognize you on the floor? You’re one of the liveliest people I’ve met and the funniest presiding officer during cluster meetings. You made us all laugh.

I remember one time when I had one of those stressful calls. I was talking to an American idiot who wanted me to perform magic on his reservations. We were talking for almost an hour and I was banging my mouse, typing at the keyboard with great force and cursing under my breath. I was clearly irate. You walked behind me and tap me at my shoulder. You startled me when I saw you, and you asked me, “Are you okay? Can you still handle the call?” I was tomato red. I was so ashamed of myself that it took me awhile to regain my composure. “Yes. Thank you for asking.” That was my only reply. At least you made me give extra patience to the person I was talking to on the phone.

I know we were not close. We were merely acquaintances, but somehow you’re one particular person from Expedia I will remember for the rest of my life. You will always be part of the PeopleSupport family and the “call center stories” that I will tell my friends and family for generations to come.

Potchi, you will be missed, especially the people who loved you so much.

In Panic

Yesterday we were in panic. Rocky aka Mio, (my dog) almost died. If you’re familiar with Miniature Pinchers, they’re a breed that loves to play. Their favorites are bottles and bottle caps. Mio was no exception, he loves to get empty bottles from under the sink and you’ll be surprised how he could twist the cap using his paws and teeth. He can do this within five minutes. Yesterday, while I was cooking pesto for the first time, Germaine was shrieking with panic. Mio, as usual, went under the sink looking for his toys. What he got was a bottle of bleaching fluid. He actually punctured the bottle causing the chemical to leak. We were so afraid that he ingested enough to make him die. As per instruction from the bleach bottle, we needed to make him drink milk, and that’s what we did. Luckily, he is still alive and kicking today.

Panic is our topic for today. This feeling is what I hated the most because it is associated with fear. On this state, you blab uncontrollably in a high pitch tone and terror was so visible it was contagious. The worst part is you’re thoughts are cloudy, blocked by fear. This is why Germaine and I caused ruckus in the heat of the afternoon where everyone in dhe building where having their siesta. She irritated me with the shrieking manner she relayed the news to me. All she could say was “He will die! He will die! He will die!” The best thing to do in this situation is to stay calm, at least one of us should be. One should think properly and look for a solution. Maybe this is one of the reasons why everyone is advised to stay calm during the state of calamity. The seriousness of panic attack may cause more damage due to mental block.

Here’s the deal. Apparently, I was in panic again. I don’t know how to tell my boss later that I’m resigning. That is part of my big change this year. I want to change my career and that means changing companies as well. I was given a better offer and finally I’ve decided to pass my resignation later. My previous boss wanted a change too. He applied to a different account hoping for a big leap. He was accepted and as parting gift, he transferred me to email team, the position I’m gunning for since day one. He made me promised 100% commitment on this new job. The problem is that the offer from the other company was given later. Now it doesn’t feel good breaking a promise and communicating bad news.

In case he stumbled on this blog, I want to tell him how sorry I am for letting him down. I’m sorry that I didn’t keep my promise and that it took days for me to consider my options. I am grateful for every thing that he has done and here’s wishing both of us better careers.

Anyway, I’m still in the process of calming myself down. I believe I’m in a tense state already because I can’t think straight and this blog is a ramble. My stomach is churning and the coffee and cigarette are not helping at all.

The Most Indirect Blog Entry That I Ever Wrote

January feels like Christmas! I feel that I was on a long holiday vacation from a different planet and I just got back from earth unwrapping each parcels under the withered Christmas tree. Most of the things that needs to be done and what should be done was over and done with. I am now enjoying the presents, the outcome, the results.

Have you ever felt worthless sometimes in your life? Have you ever felt bad about some situation? It is so bad that there’s no other option or even solution to find your way out and all you need to do is wait on what will happen next hopefully things will be okay at the end.

Then came after the dry season was rain. Options and choices are outpouring. All I need to do is choose and whichever I want will be a positive outcome. I am excited that it made me too anxious with each passing seconds.

I was on the parched state for far too long and I was glad I’m almost on the top right now. I know, what I’m writing right now was too indirect and I might lose connection here but what I’m trying to say is that this is my last chance to establish who I really am. I am turning thirty this year and as what others say, people in their 30’s were already established. I should at least set my foot on the ground and raise my forehead high six months from now.

P.S.

A lot of things will change but some of it will remain. I will still be a nicotine and caffeine junkie.

The Cab, The Call Center Industry and the White Piece of Paper

Ten minutes ago, I was in the middle of deciding whether I go to sleep or writing a blog piece. I can see that you finally found out what I’ve decided to do, I am going to consume more electricity by switching on the lights, turning on the water heater to make myself a cup of coffee, turning on the electric fan and booting up the laptop. I just had this horrible thought that if I sleep, I might wake up in the evening and the beautiful day will just gone by. This is one of the things that we’re being robbed off by the call center companies - a long “normal sunny day”.

Yesterday was a busy day compared to what was going to happen now. Unlike today, I’m going to worry how the hell I’m going to clean this super duper messy house right after I finished writing. Yesterday was pushing my luck. I applied for a non-voice account.

I submitted resumes the day before through email and was asked for an appearance to two different companies. I turned down the first job offer because the salary was too low and decided to take a cab to reach my second destination. The driver, for the love of God (sorry for the blasphemy) was a chatterbox. How I love silence when riding a cab especially if your mind was in the process of constructing some sensible thoughts. Anyway, the driver started with an icebreaking questions as usual and didn’t get my I-don’t-want-to-talk-right-now answers. Soon enough I gave up my sensible thoughts construction and gave in for a “stranger conversation”. He was a graduate of Banking and Finance and was bored of the banking job and quit. He then pursued a travel agent career to a Korean company and learned different languages. The company closed so he decided to be a cab driver and be a tour guide as a racket. I will not tell you about his biography and how he became a “linguist”, instead I want to share with you some information that he told me during the Metro Manila ride.

There’s this American customer who came to ride on his cab. Imagine his chatter mouth and non-stop questions, he got his customer to talk. The American was an employee from a big company in the US and was deployed here in the Philippines to negotiate their business with a call center company. He was told that his company from the US was willing to give P25,000 as a basic salary for each of the employees but the call center company told them that P15,000 – P18,000 were enough to the Filipino employees. So what’s wrong with this picture? The people who are running the call center industries were selfish and idiots!

I will tell you what is wrong. I have been absent for two weeks already because I keep getting sick. I developed hypertension due to stress from irate callers. Our job is to sound friendly even if the customers are cursing you already. Part of the job is to multi-task. To be able to ignore the shouting curses from the customer’s dirty mouths while you do what has to be done even if they want you to perform a David Copperfield magic fiasco. I developed insomnia due to shifting schedules and I ruined my social life. Lately, I developed laryngitis that might kill me if I will not rest my voice. You see? That’s the reason why I’m looking for a non-voice account and I don’t think that P15,000 – P18,000 is enough motivation for me to work my ass off with the work schedule of 2:00 am – 1:00 pm. Ang cute nila, ‘di ba?

How can you not provide us something that is reasonable? The health benefit doesn’t work at all! Imagine where I could get the money for this lab test that the physician asked me to undergo if the health insurance doesn’t cover everything? You think the salary that you negotiated from them are enough?! Some of us have families to feed and bills to pay! Kalokohan! But we can’t do anything about it, right? It is better than being jobless. Like what the American told the driver, the decision is not with them but in the call center companies. Hay, bwisit!

So he dropped me off to this great building of this great company. I was asked to be seated at the lobby to fill out the information that’s already in my resume. The second page was composed of three essay questions. I was still answering the first question when I was herded to one of the rooms with the other applicants. We were asked to take a 2-hour exam. Only ten questions for the English and the rest are all about mathematics. Even the IQ test is number series. Ang hirap pare! We were given a calculator and I can’t even use it because I don’t know how to compute it. Grabe, it’s a nightmare! I really wanted to have the courage to stand up and tell the moderator that I don’t want to take the test anymore and leave the company premises. Well, the courage didn’t dawn upon me that afternoon but determination does. I just answered the paper ridiculously and leave most of the questions unanswered. I can’t even imagine how the other applicants get to answer the questionare with ties around their neck or blazers on. I am wearing jeans people with my Chucks on and that doesn’t make the exam easier. After the long exam, na-torta talaga utak ko and I do feel mentally violated. I was mentally harassed. I was mentally humiliated. Imagine, what is the answer to C (….) X? I was asked to answer the dotted line and the number of dots is the number of letters of the correct answer. Feel free to leave a comment on this blog entry if you happen to know the answer kasi ang bobo ko. I texted Germaine to pick me up immediately whether I get the chance to get the result or not because I was so convinced that I failed the exam. I don’t know what took Germaine so long but my name was called for the result. If you’re familiar with the call center recruitment procedure, you know that the piece of paper is a piece of failure. I didn’t bother to open the piece of paper. My “oh well’ feeling was nursed by a stick of cigarette. As I sat next to Germaine in her red Alto, I blabbed about the exam and how thirsty and stressed I was. I suddenly felt the appreciation of being employed to the company who took me in ten months ago and I vowed to be a good employee as soon as I resume to work. I don’t know what’s gotten into me but I bothered to open the white piece of paper and read.

Dear Mr./Ms. (My name here):

Thank you for your time in applying here at -------.

We are pleased to inform you that you have been short-listed and you are invited to attend an interview scheduled on January 19, 2010 at 3:30 pm.

Please proceed to the reception area and ask the Front Desk Associate to inform Mr. X of your arrival.

Thank you very much and we wish you all the best in you r career.

Sincerely,

The Recruitment Team

I was dumbfounded. Shocked I believe. There’s probably a mixed up on the exam papers or this is what you call a sheer damn luck. Yeah, it was luck alright.

On January 19, 2010, I will be on the same state of confusion again. There will be a self-debate if I will allow myself to be mentally harassed again because from the beginning of this piece I chose an option and resulted an outcome. I am eager to know what will happen for the next ten years resulting to the biggest decision I will take on Tuesday. Life offers a lot of options and I am always willing to grab one.

Sundays

It’s technically Monday, 12:33 in the morning 11th of January. I had a slight fever from the afternoon activity and the cold medicine that I took ridiculously won’t allow me to sleep. I had the feeling of insomnia comeback and it’s making my recovery a total flop. This is bad. Totally bad. I’m in the middle of ripping my body in so many pieces because I want to do a lot of things at the same time. I can’t actually decide if I will be watching cartoons to help me relax because that’s what sick people do; or do a brainstorming about a new idea that’s brewing on my mind about something that will surprise everyone especially myself if God forbids that I will have the discipline to do it; or do the laundry; or wash the “never-ending-dirty-plates” on the sink; or cook Germaine’s breakfast and baon; or play the “Magic Jewelry” from my Gameboy. You see, I have a lot of things that I wanted to be done right now because time is catching up on me again. I can’t multi-task because again, I’m sick and cloning is definitely not an option. I spend a lot of time deciding on what to do first and I wasted a lot of milliseconds again.

Anyway, I decided to write another crap, I mean blog. I want to tell you about Sunday mornings again. I’m planning on buying a cheap coffee maker (probably around P500) because Sunday morning is not a Sunday morning without an aromatic coffee on your favorite cup. (and every coffee addicts know that). The over easy eggs and toast are delightful or if you wanted something heavy, vigan longganisa and danggit (from Germaine’s sister) are delectable and it goes well with garlic rice, tomatoes and sukang Ilocano. Well, apparently, Coffee alone is the main thing on my Sunday morning and I really love it to be associated with fine music. I remember choosing bossa nova for the past three years and this morning was a turnaround. I choose something light and easy. So here’s my playlist that I want to share with you.

Uwi

Hey, I am starting to visit home again. I am brewing my coffee, hugging our family dog and yeah, eating Malou aka Sam's home-cooked meals again. I am somewhat present during family day again and I'm loving every bit of it - whether I'm taking/stealing things from them nyahahaha.

I'm itching to take a leave just to seriously post the compiled articles I wrote during the last four months - ganon katindi - but since money makes the world go round, it seems like I don't have any choice.

I am currently crazy about kid's stuffs again. The cartoons, the sweets, the pinks and yellows kind of stuffs..you see, I'm stressed about work and earning money and paying the bills and the responsibility of having two dogs at the house, it's making me ill - the lines on my forehead are starting to show and I am smelling the age of thirty. I think it's awful. I believe that I should still keep the child in me, don't you think?

All grown-ups were children first. (But few remember it).

The Business Letter

A couple of days ago, my new supervisor handed me a white envelope. It was weird receiving a letter from a company especially if the letter was addressed to me. I opened the parcel, ripping it on its side. It was a business letter alright - in two pages. The content was formal. It followed the business writing that I learned when I was in high school. I know I should not talk about the grammar or the tenses of how it was written; I am writing this piece because the letter tells me where I am now and how the past six months have gone by.

The letter states that I am now a regular employee. For the first time in my 29 years, I have become a regular employee. The formal dressing, the dizzying bus trips, the tensed feeling of long interviews, the night schedules, the memorization of hundreds of papers, the proper diction, the exam harassments, the tight compliance with company policies, the stressful conversations with the clients and the pressure of hitting my metrics - these are the things that occupied my hyper time. The remaining time and energy left are for sleeping. I became a lousy homemaker, best friend, sister and daughter. Opening this white envelope reveals a lot of thought and issues that I’ve been ignoring for the last six months. As the letter ended, I think about some things that put to an end to an almost perfect job.

It’s the friendship that matters and how I can grow and move inside the company. They say people in your lives come and go. I never realize how fast it will be in this kind of industry.

I made friends during my training days. There were seven of us originally. We ate, we laughed, we smoked, we dreamt and texted each other. As we were distributed to different teams, the text messages became fewer, and soon enough most of them resigned and the only three of us were left. I made friends again with the new team. The closest friend I had was Joanna. We were inseparable until one day she was gone. I was so sad and lonely that I never sit at the last post we spent together. The spam messages were gone and soon enough the work is work and was never fun at all. Two months after, my supervisor sent a goodbye letter. The team was again, distributed to different teams. I was now under this supervisor who is kind of homophobic. I was absent for two days because my partner was very sick. He told me it was not valid because she was not to be considered as an immediate family member. Nakakabadtrip kasi sabi nila call center jobs are for LGBT’s because they don’t discriminate. Technically, she was supposed to be considered as an immediate family member because we were living together as what other married couples do. Kasalan ko ba kung walang legal documents? As I think about it, that supervisor is the one who is homophobic not the company. He is the one to decide about this case and even if I called earlier I was tagged as NCNS (Read as AWOL).

As I am folding back the business letter, putting it inside the white envelope again, I think about what I am going to do if I decided to resign because this is the thing, it is easier to leave because you have an option to stay.

Ondoy

It is Sunday, 27th of September 2009 and this is not an ordinary weekend. It is my last rest day and It was supposed to be chores day instead I was just sitting at the couch staring into nothingness. God, there is no coffee in the cupboard, no decent food in the ref and no emergency canned goods lying around. The mess of the house and the mountain of laundry are irritating. It was doomsday. It was doomsday and I only have potato chips to survive.

I feel angry and upset and so I watched five lousy movies and get eight hours of sleep. I still feel livid and distress by the time I woke up and I end up sitting at the couch and staring into nothingness again. I cannot make myself do the laundry or sweep the floor for a start or maybe even make an effort of opening the bag of chips. There is something I need to do or feel or something I am waiting to happen. And it does. My cellphone was ringing and as I looked who the caller is, it was my dad. I’m battling with myself if I’m going to answer or not. Why is he calling me? (Answer it.) Did I do something wrong? (Don’t answer it.) Is he asking me to join the family day? (Answer it.) Will he be making arrangements for December to babysit my teenage sister? (Don’t answer it.) God, the flood! Is my family okay?! And so I answered it. It took me awhile to answer it but I did.

Me: Hello?
Pops: Are you okay?
Me: Yeah, Okay lang kayo dyan?
Pops: Oo. Where are you?
Me: Bahay. Baha. Two people are dead.
Pops: Somebody texted Jay, nawawala ka daw.
Me: I’m okay.
Pops: Baha pa ba?
Me: I don’t know. I don’t wanna go out.
Pops: San ka ba malapit sa Araneta? Funeraria Paz or Arlinton?
Me: Arlington. Baha pa rin dyan?
Pops: Hindi. Just take care, okay?
Me: I will. Kayo din, bye.
Pops: Bye.

And the phone call made me cry. It’s a five-minute good cry. I’m 29, independent crying lesbian. The cry clears my head and bravely, I booted the laptop, inserted my USB and opened up the Word because now I am ready to take a step inside the time machine and go back to yesterday as I write what happened 26th of September 2009.

The team building was held at my officemate’s covered rooftop. The party’s a blast as we eat and drink our P4,000.00 Sodexo (Team funds in a form of GC provided by the company) away. By 1pm, the party was ended and we were alarmed to see the flood downstairs. Babes, the guy who owned the place told us it was the first time that the flood reached their driveway. Now this is serious. From Instrucion in Espana, I dipped my newest chucks to a knee-high flood. My teammates and I are cruising Manila with umbrellas that are pretty useless as we made an effort crossing the vehicle-less main road with strong waves of flood crushing you back and forth. It was sort of fun since it gives the true meaning of “team building”. We departed at Rotonda. The team left as a team because they have one destination and that is the LRT. I was left alone and my goal is to reach Araneta Ave. and that’s where the horror starts. I folded the useless umbrella and put it inside my already wet bag. I was bathing in the rain, no typhoon rain, with my glasses on. It was a long walk. It’s been an hour before I reached the part where the flood is in my shoulders. It was scary and I sat on the jeepney’s bumper together with other stranded people. The bus was stuck in the middle of the flood, alone and we can see it from afar. It didn’t make it. The flood was deeper on that side and it was half the bus already. That same street was deeper because it already reached the Suzuki’s E. Rodriguez’s branch service bay ceiling. God it reached the ceiling! Flood and fire. People’s houses were shattered and some caught fire. Imagine houses under the flood like Atlantis? A child was drowned and seeing this before your eyes was horrible. Too horrible that it made me stare and gives me nightmares afterwards. I found my way home through begging Philippine Charity Sweepstakes to let me through their gate so I can pass thru the other gate where I lived. I was lucky, seeing Bayani St. was somehow at peace. I reached the third floor panting, packed with heavy clothes, colds, virus and in a disoriented situation. It was not long when I think about the disaster in Istanbul or the red dust in Australia. Now, “Ondoy” hitting the Philippines. How come this is not predicted earlier? Does our government have to do with this?

So there, it took me a five-minute good cry to collect my thoughts again and retell my story to someone who cares. I feel lost for more than 24 hours and I haven’t received any caring words from my family except my bestfriend Ivory up until now. I don’t blame them, probably they where in a state of feeling disoriented too and my girlfriend’s flight was cancelled twice already and was stucked in Bicol and knowing how she will go straight to her family’s house to attend a birthday party after Ondoy’s aftermath didn’t make me feel good at all. Who wouldn’t feel sh*tty?

Now and Then

March 12, 2009

I’m on my training now. I find myself alone. I looked like a drab loner with a heavy problem of being an outcast.

My batchmates told me “Magsalita ka naman”
The other one told the others “Gusto nga nya mapunta sa non-voice account eh”

Yeah…Terrific!

I keep on memorizing pages of manuals. By the time I settled myself on the bus, I took out the reviewers and memorize. Never did I study this hard before, not when I was in college, nor in my highschool, not even in my gradeschool.

I remember crying with Jenny Gallegos on the hallway when we were in highschool. We have a periodical test in history and we were cramming ourselves memorizing the exact places of each provinces on the Philippine map. The names of the heroes and the dates they were brutally executed were even harder. Ayaw pumasok sa isip naming dalawa eh kahit nag-essence of chicken na’ko nun pare! Wa eh! Wa-epek! I hate history as much as I hate math. Funny how I can now easily memorize the US map, the airport codes and its cities and have a perfect score. What is the difference between taking the exam now and way back in highschool? Mas matindi siguro ang need of survival ngayon kesa noon kasi ngayon pinaghihirapan ang pera hindi tulad noon hinihingi lang ang pera, hay..

The Job

March 12

Last Wednesday, 4th of March, I finally decided to find a job. I rode a bus from Kamuning that took me 20 useless minutes standing in front of pink and blue waiting shed that was provided by Metro Gwapo boys. I looked around for a window seat that was located in the middle of the bus. I stared blankly to the billboard scenery. Everything is the same as it used to be: polluted, greenless, bumper to bumper traffic city. Nothing spectacular. Nothing special.

I find myself wrapped up with hundreds of applicants inside the room waiting to be called.

“Isang mahabang pila, mabagal at walang katapusan”
- Earaserheads

There were two interviews and 4 exams. My brain turns to mash. I’m hungry, cranky and my level of patience goes down to zero. From 11:00am – 11:00 pm of maximum screening, I end up looking like a rape victim.

The salary, benefits and compensation that were offered was rewarding though the requirements are too complex. Rewarding yet nerve-wrecking.

Life again is oxymoron.

I drank with Ivy like useless bystander ranting about how inconvenient the day was. I joyously drank forgetting about the medical exam the following day.

Medical Exam:

Repeat Chorus:

“Isang mahabang pila, mabagal at walang katapusan”
- Earaserheads

Yeeha!
1. The clinic is clean.
2. The clinic is spotless.
3. The clinic is gleaming.

Oh no!
1. They make me pee on a specimen bottle and on a large gravy size plastic cup.
2. There was a scarcity of tissue or just another cost-cutting issue.
3. The clinic was located outside the vicinity of roads and highways and walking under the angry sun was an only option. My BP turned out to be 160/110 and I was advised to see a cardiologist, how cute!
4. The lady doctor stuck her finger on my virgin ass.
5. They didn’t inform me that it took 3 hours to get the pregnancy test. I sat there waiting na tipong tinutubuan na ko ng ugat. They should have informed me because I can still use the time to get other requirements. Yan ang hirap pagnagkatrabaho e, ikaw na ang naghahabol sa oras hindi tulad nung bum ako e oras pa ang naghahabol sa akin. Sa sobrang badtrip ko e sinabi ko sa receptionist ay ganito:
“Miss alam kong SOP ang pregnancy test, but I can guarantee you that I’m not pregnant kasi una, single ako at pangalawa lesbiana ako” – e di tapos!

Anticipatedly Waiting

March 1, 2009

I made the choice. I am beginning to climb the first step of the new change in my life. I am in the process of making the whole new me, from housewife to a career woman, from pauper to prince, from drab to dazzling! Though the stupid horoscope tells me that my fortune is weak and my future is dim until the month of June, I made my choice to at least try no matter how terrified I am. I just wish that CHANGE are easier to achieve like the story of Snooky Serna’s “blusang itim” where everything can be settled as soon as she wears the magical black blouse. However, I will take everything slowly, carefully feeling every bump and hump on the road just like how Rustom Padilla turned into Bebe Gandanghari. I wish I could adapt so easily.

Ang dami kong sinabi. All I want to say is that I’m preparing for a job interview tomorrow. Yes, I am preparing like a dimwit. I even bought Susan Valentin’s Career Guide for Job-Seeker’s book at the Book Sale for fifty three pesos all for the heck of it! My partner brought some materials that will help me “enhance” the knowledge of properly answering job interview questions. It’s actually helpful and she’s giving me a mock interview.

Anyway, this thing that I’m doing was anticipated by everyone except me since I believe that being a housewife is a career and that I still dream to be a rich woman’s housewife. Since things didn’t work out as I planned, I’m hatefully doing the interview tomorrow.

Monday Storm

The storm is hitting Manila right this afternoon. It's freezing in and out of the building. Coffee and smoking are very essential this minute and I feel sorry for not wearing layers of clothes today. If only I have these items in violent pink and electric purple, (I might look like a giant snowman) but still, I am tempted to wear earmuffs, mittens, bonnet, snow boots and scarf. My teeth are chattering and my hands are turning white. I feel like my coffee is turning into ice.

Speaking of ice, I haven't seen Ice Age 3 yet and everybody in this office were talking about it. I feel that there's nothing spectacular and it's a waste of 200 pesos. The only thing that I like on that movie is the saber-toothed squirrel whose madly obsessed with an acorn and he was an extra. For years I thought that this character doesn't have a name. A friend (Penguin), gave me a a stuffed-saber-toothed squirrel from Ice Age for christmas and I decided to call him Heffner and since everybody likes him and that he is absolutely popular because I'm bringing him to every travel I went to, my brother stole him one night and named him Ricky. My brother just turned 25, how cute and immature of him at the same time. Anyway, that thing has a name as I googled my way through Wikipedia and the character's name is Scrat. I'm sorry Scrat but to me I will still call my stuffed-scrat Heffner aka Ricky.

Anyway, this movie is bland compared to the cartoons I've watched that really pinched a heart. My all time favorite is Monters Inc. and I swear that I have seen this for more than 20 times. This is a kind of movie to watch when you're sick in bed while eating noodles and the raindrops continously sliding down your window pane.

Remember this?

THIS (IM)PERFECT PLACE

I left Makati for almost a month a now. I ran away. Not in the sense of running away like teenagers do, but I’m running away. I ran away from things I cannot do. I’m running away from harm that will cause me from so much pain. I’m running away from gossip. I’m running away from hatred and all that shit. I’m running away from responsibility. I’m running away from a stressful job. I’m running away from reality. Basically, I’m running away from an unhappy life.

I ran away to a new place so that I can heal the wounds slowly. I am broken into a million little pieces. I know it will take a lot of time, but I’m allowing myself to go through the process. Sometimes you need to find a place to start your life again. A place where you can run freely without any dictates and even better without any communication. Sometimes the child in you has a terrible need for what is surreal and drives your instinct for someplace to play. You have to start somewhere.

I transferred somewhere in between Quezon City and Manila where condominiums are actually not as high as you can see in the elite class of the dream city. But it is more colorful than you can imagine.

Children, vendors, teenagers, nurses, workers, bummers are everywhere - all kinds of people. Tom cats and stray dogs are everywhere. There are four sort of security guards/barker in shifting schedules. Parking is crazy during the night. Parked cars are very similar to how my little brother parked his Matchbox.

Our building’s paint is faded, chipped from the change of the weather. Almost each unit has a string of clothes like banderitas for a fiesta. There’s no elegant reception, drapes, elevator or even layers of chandeliers. The stairs are uneven. The hallways are dark, cold and wet even on the brightest day. The ceilings and walls are musty, covered with fractured cobwebs. I can hear the oil dancing in my neighbor‘s pan and the onions being sautéed on a skillet waft different aromas and flavors through the halls.

The corridors resound with disjointed voices and music; the wailing of babies in harmony with their nannies’ lullabies. The laughter, arguments, problems, even the simple conversation of these people are like chants. It gives you an affirmation of existence and a normal cycle of life.

DOORS
The door of each unit is usually closed. Trust is an issue and nobody trusts anybody now. Solicitors were shooed away, even missionaries. Each door is different from plain to sculpted, from green to blue, from mahogany to narra. Each door reflects different family, different persona, different lives.
Let me tell you a story about my door and the inside of it. Like everyone else’s, it’s closed. Even if you open it, it will automatically lock itself to close. The door represents as an opening to welcome various – yet familiar guests. Opening a door wasn’t that easy, it’s like revealing to a stranger your hideous secrets, giving them opportunity to draw in your life.
The owner of my apartment was a professor and a brilliant architect from a well-known school. However, his heart was not as distrustful as his door. This door plays a major role in his life. Students, professionals and other male friends that won’t be classified are his various guests. Some of them are knockers, some are knob-twisters and the special ones are the keyholders. September of 2007 was the time he last closed this door. He had a stroke that made him immobile and he left the apartment in care of his sister, who is my partner, Germaine.
The door is made of narra, with a single sculpted column embossed on it. This Greco-Roman pillar appears very bold and deeply symbolizes masculinity. It is heavy, thick and unscathed, almost phallic. The window grills contrast the art of its door. The welding is softly adorned with lotuses, painted in maroon, an indication of strong femininity.
The apartment’s floor is tiled in green and white. The place is smallish, a mere 6 steps from the front door to the kitchen. The walls used to be ungraciously accessorized with uneven bookshelves that held thousands of papers, hundreds of thesis and pieces of books, and this, I gladly dismounted.
The breakfast counter is purposely placed almost in the heart of the room to serve as a partition. The kitchen was designed to be illuminated with a nice light. When we first arrived, a collection of tupperware was visible everywhere. The kitchen cabinets still held pieces of plates and silverware. These are not just plates and silverwares. They are souvenirs from hotels and bars from around the world. These collections are now replaced by microwaveables, cheap plates and stolen glasses. There are bottles of cleansers, detergents – all sorts of chemicals under the kitchen sink. The maroon shower curtain serves as a door to the bathroom and the laundry area is separated by a tiled wall.
The stairs were slightly curved, matching the varnished door. The loft’s floor is made of entirely wood. Each footstep makes it creak. The ceiling is cold, roughly cemented and low. The cabinet is built-in, wide and doesn’t have a door so it exposes our whole wardrobe. The study table doesn’t have a decent light and needed the assistance of a table lamp. The bed makes the finishing touches and since mattresses were heavy and stores sells them over-priced, we settled ourselves to an airbed.
The outer side of our room that faces the other building is made of jalousie and was caged by ironed grills with a design of lotuses. The window provides a spectacular view. It gives me an opportunity to take a glimpse of my neighbor’s lives.
TRANSITION
So what do 28 year old runaways do?
I spent the first day cleaning. A house will never be a house if it’s inhabitable. I threw away the remaining papers, unlabeled cleansers and bottles of unknown chemicals like I threw away my baggage. I wiped away the dirt to each jalousie like I wipe the tears in my eyes. I swept the floor like I want myself to be scoured faultless. I mopped the floor to be spotless like I want myself to be cleansed. I smooth our bed neatly like how smooth I want my life to be.
The second day was spent making myself comfortable. A home is not a home if it’s lifeless. A home needs a sprinkle of laughs, a dash of hope, a splash of care and a speckle of love. A home has the ability to adapt the owner’s life. The mood adjusted the room’s temperature. The feelings that you exert will vibrate to its corners -- even the slowest movement, slightest tune and tiny whimpers are being whispered to the walls. Germaine and I cooked, ate, laughed, kissed and made love the whole day.
The third day was to familiarize myself with the community. I go down the neighborhood and observed. I mapped out the places that will be necessary for me. There’s a pharmacy, laundry shops, eateries, internet cafes, a water station, a bakery, salons, a talipapa and a dozen of sari-sari stores. There is also a Catholic church a few blocks away, but while there are at least two maternity and pediatric clinics, no real hospital is at hand for medical emergencies.
Each afternoon is catered by different vendors. They put up stalls and occupied the right side of building 2. The first stall was owned by nanay, an old plump lady. She was the Queen of Saging na Saba. She cooked bananas in wide variety. She sells turon, banana-que, banana fries and my favorite, maruya. She also sells different kinds of kakanin that reminds me of Simbang Gabi. Although her cooking abilities worked to run her banana empire, her spaghetti was the worst pasta I’ve ever tasted in my entire life.
The second stall was owned by the fattest lady in our community and she managedo be the fairest of us all. She flashes her first-class Louies Vouitton imitation handbag, sways with the rhythm of her waddling hips and pointed her porky finger to boss around her maid who do the cooking and the selling. She was the Burger Queen. You can have everything on your burger, from the bun to the de-takal na lasa na mayo, Papa ketsup, a rabbit’s cabbage-coleslaw, artificial cheese, super-pipit burger patty and slightly burnt egg topped with a bun and viola! Cheap Oil-burger on a bun!
The next stall was owned by a thin lady. She was so thin that she looked like a skeleton with a skin. She was like a walking X-ray. She sells Calamares - squid rings dipped in batter and fried until golden brown. Sounds good, tastes like hell! I had long lost my appetite for squids when I happened to watch Pirates of the Carribean. Captain Jones’ face was so disgusting! He’s a squid man rotting with algae and half of his face was covered with a starfish and his moving tentacles served as his beard.
Next to it is the serious woman in her late 30’s. She’s a nagger. She scares the buyers. You can’t ask the price if you’re not going to buy it. She spanked her children on the streets. She yells to her husband to shame. She’s a perfect definition of an Amazon. She’s the Ola Queen and she sells you-call-this-Mexican foods. The tacos are not edible.
Beside her is a woman with the waviest hair. She looks like she stepped out of the magazine page during the 80’s. She wears ribbons, bonnets and balloon skirts like Cyndi Lauper. She pouted as if ready to blow a kiss but not in a sexy way. Her lipstick is in shade of Puta Red. I call her Cyndi, Cyndi Lupa. She sells fish balls, squid balls, kikiam and kwek-kwek.
The girl next to her is the Mushroom Girl, bigla na lang sumusulpot. She’s like the commercial ad for Lady’s Choice Mayonaise, ‘Now you see, now you don’t’. She sells pails, dippers, hangers and basins.
Last in the row was the Balot vendor. The lady is fond of wearing leggings. She always matched it with dress-like blouses. She reminded me of Angelica Pickles of Rugrats.
The remaining days of the week were spent hibernating. That’s how tired I was. I was physically and emotionally wasted. Since I worked the night shift before for 1 and ½ years, I had become nocturnal. The sleep that I’ve been getting helps a lot. My body clock has returned to normal.
On the second week, I finally decided to be a housewife. I get up at seven in the morning and I cook breakfast usually associated with eggs, juice, tea or coffee, carbs and the usual morning talks. The cigarette is toasting and text messages are highly arousing, the other messages are friendly hellos and forwarded quotes, there is one message that I’ve been avoiding for a week now. This message will bring me back to reality and this message will come from Gerdine, a friend from previous work, waiting for an answer. She wanted us to apply for a job together. I want to tell her that I’m just starting to enjoy the seconds of my time now and I wanted more. I decided to text her later.
So Germaine and I ate, conversed, I smoked and packed her lunch, shrieked for some goddamn reason, activated my Globe unlitext. And after she left, I ditched the exercise program which I am about to start and snore the remaining hours away. By the time I woke up, which seems to be 50 golden years, the unlitext was activated within 24 hours. Hail to the Globe Company! I texted Gerdine to give me another week.
I’ve learned a lot of things. I learned that being inside the poor community shares poor satellite for cellular phones. To think that we’re residing on the third floor! How bad can it be? My text messages will be received every 30 minutes. I was told that shit happens and that each shit has an outlet where you can see a reason why it happened; like probably there’s a good thing why it happened, like rainbow after the rain or the Chinese ying-yang mania. The good thing about delayed messages is that I can collect my thoughts so that I can reply sensibly rather that “Uhuh”, “You’re right”, “It’s true”, “yes”, “no” and the famous “Haha!” Besides, I can always make the poor signal a reason that I haven’t received the message, right? Have you ever received a message that you don’t actually know how to respond? You go gaga thinking for an appropriate reply and after several minutes all you can come up is texting “Haha”. At least now I have a reasonable alibi that cell sites suck here and that’s exactly what I told Gerdine.
The succeeding week was spent watching Korea-novelas. I watched ‘They Kissed Again’ only to disappoint me with the ending. Besides DVD marathons, I enjoyed being a housewife.
The following week was the realization phase. My partner became busy with her new job and I’m always left alone. We don’t do the usual morning talks and she comes home late and barely touches the food that I prepared. I got tired of watching DVDs and finished most of the games on the computer. The house became quiet and it’s true that silence is deafening. It really echoes through the walls. The loneliness is unbearable.
I hated sunsets and during sunset, when everything turns lonely and sad, I pulled up my blinds and watched my neighbors outside. These strangers became my comfort.
If you’re going to look opposite my window, to my left, dwells a large family. Their family is so big that their grandmother and 3 Japanese Spitz dogs are included. I don’t know how they can manage because they’re like ballroom gowns inside the staircase closet. The grandmother loves gardening, so they made a miniature of it in front of their kitchen window. They had a birdcage that is empty. The children, both girls, play every afternoon.
The window directly in front of me is always closed. Since their jalousies were clear and not smoked, they used cheap-laced curtains to have some sort of privacy. There lived a simple husband who is married to the plainest wife and they run an uninteresting life. All I know is that one of them uses contact lenses because they have this large bottle of contact lens solution by their windowsill.
Next to the conventional couple, to the right, resides a very entertaining family. They throw occasional children’s parties and do videoke every weekend. They have an aquarium that lights their room. They have misunderstandings, troubles and laughter. There is shouting, washing and chatting. There are emotions. There are feelings, high and low. There’s interaction. They have the ability to live and not just to exist.
They are strangers and to them I am nobody, shuffling carelessly to my kitchen’s wide-open window. To me they are comfort. They are movies but you know they are real. This place is noisy and almost dirty, but it’s perfect. The city is starless, but it is absolutely perfect.
FOUL PLAY
So I did runaway. The realization phase was over and soon the problem began. My mom will move to a tiny room in Makati for 3K. I couldn’t afford the previous rent especially now that I’m jobless. It breaks my heart to know that I’m not giving her and my siblings a decent place to live in. I began to ask myself, am I selfish? I dread to go to work and the last time burns me out but being a bum means getting away from responsibility. The heartache starts when they told me that they are moving out and transferring to a smaller room. It’s like a slap on my face. Nakakahiya ako. I made my cousin pay for half of the ongoing rent and that cousin is supporting her own family as well. I let my brother shoulder all the responsibility even though I know hindi nya kaya. I need to do something and that something is a job. The sad part is the kind of job that I’ll be getting. I know sooner or later I will be landing on a call center job again because that’s the only job that can give me and my ability a decent salary.
Running away gives me time and comfort that I needed but I can’t be a ranaway for the rest of my life. I will have to come out from my hiding place and face reality sooner or later. This place became my playground and it teaches the child in me that after a whole day of play, you’ll know that the game is over and it’s time for you to go home.
Being gone for a long time changed me. I can now make the matches spark. I was once a girl who doesn’t know how to light a match.
Again I’m preparing myself for an unhappy stressful life. I think an unhappy stressful life is better than having heartbreaks and guilt. How can I compare desperate things and used the word better?
I believe that one day everything will be in proper place to create a beautiful picture like solving 1000 pieces of jigsaw puzzle. Life is ironic. Life is definitely an oxymoron.

Some Not-So-Current Issues

I'm away from "artificial" home for almost 3 weeks now. Artificial. Home. Home. Artificial. My home is artificial. I don't have a home. I have a house to stay in but I don't have a home. Home is different from a house, Home is the soul of the house. Makati is my home. It used to be my home. Makati is a place. A place is a special space where it all began. I was mold there. Therefore, Makati is a place I considered home.

I'm away from home for almost 3 weeks now. I miss the coffee maker and jazz. I miss the crooked stairs, comfortable silence and liberty of smoking all over the place. I miss the good mornight pasta with a friend and an indulgement of chips, liquors and icecream. I miss the chaos around the street from Aling Ludy's habitual early morning sweeping to the late night dancing of teenage bummers and it's bystanders audience.

I should be missing a person, family perhaps but I guess when something that was so good turns to bad, it becomes depressing, then you have to create a wonderful world.

By believing passionately in something that still does not exist, we create it. The nonexistent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired. -- Franz Kafka

Dear God, I looked forward to April.

-------------------------------------------------------

So here comes work. I used to meet Dolly at Barrio Fiesta every working day, me running late, grinning and making excuses asking what her baon is. I missed that too. A 10 to 15-minute jeepney ride and voila! Now, I uncomfortably walked under the wicked sun pretending I was walking on sand even if it feels like walking past millions of cactuses around the place sweating and panting like a dog struggling for an oasis. I sometimes stop and admire the busy place while I smile to anyone who needs it. I'm taking LRT to MRT on my way to work. I'm not complaining about the travel because this is the only way I can be with my GF, it's the work that gets me, crawling to my nerves from hitting metrics to everyday updates which contains wonderful work of disney with no increase and unbelievable policies like you'll think twice of peeing and go to work with a catheter on. This is exactly what I feel everytime I realized I'm on my way to the BIG W.

There are days when I can hardly make it out of bed. I find it an effort to speak. I measure progress in steps, the next one and the next one, as far as the bathroom. These steps are major accomplishments. I focus on taking the cap off the toothpaste, getting the brush up to my mouth. I have difficulty lifting my arm to even do that. I feel I am without worth, that nothing I can do is of any value, least of all to myself… I am a busy person, in theory. There are things to be done, although none of them are things I want to do. – Margaret Atwood, Cat’s Eye

Shifting Skeds

Good mornight is different from sunlight.
Dream venti to dream vendo.
Lazily walking to sleepy streets to chasing overload jeepneys.
This is not what I'm expecting.
I want mush hour to rush hour.
I hate this sked..
